What is a grease trap for?
A huge amount of fat is constantly entering the sewer pipes, which leads to frequent blockages. This significantly impairs the flow of water. As fat accumulates, the oxidation process begins, which leads to the formation of corrosive acids and oxygen deficiency. All this causes unpleasant odors. Over time, these conditions have an adverse effect on the quality of sewer operation.
Overgrowing of the walls of sewer pipes is a big problem that is easier to prevent than to solve later. For this purpose, special devices are installed, which are called grease traps. They help to separate grease or oil particles from water and prevent them from accumulating, which in turn helps to avoid blockages.
What does a grease trap look like and how does it work?
This is a sealed container of small size, it can be both horizontal and vertical, more often everything is made of reinforced fiberglass. Thanks to the use of this particular material, it is possible to reduce the weight of the device, and also to exclude the likelihood of a corrosion process. The design features of the equipment presuppose the presence of plastic covers that prevent the spread of unpleasant odors. At the same time, a system of partitions is provided that allow you to control the flow of water. By slowing down this flow, it is possible to dispose of oils and various fats in time.
The temperature of the liquid passing through the device, as a rule, is no more than 40 ° C, and the fats themselves are in a liquid state. That is why they appear on the surface without any difficulty, while the waste water passes through the elements of the equipment, being thoroughly cleaned.
Types of grease traps for sewage
In accordance with current legislation, cafes and restaurants are required to install equipment that prevents fats and oils from entering the wastewater. Considering that most of these establishments are located in areas of intensive urban development, they are regularly drained into the sewer system, fats can cause blockages in pipes and problems in the operation of the entire sewer system.
It is not only the requirements and control of the relevant city services that are the reason for the installation in restaurants and cafes of equipment for the treatment of waste water from fats.

Above-ground grease traps are installed in technical and basement rooms, taking into account the convenience of an approach or entrance for service and are connected to the industrial sewer network. They can be either round or rectangular.
Underground grease traps are placed vertically or horizontally underground. Only the cover of the technical well is exposed to the surface for equipment control and maintenance. An industrial street grease trap of this type is mounted in the ground on a concrete base (H-200 mm), the sides are sprinkled with a sand-cement mixture 1:10, with a layer of at least 200 mm. The top of the grease trap is closed with a plastic cover, which is 150-200 mm higher than the ground level.
In cases where it is necessary to place the equipment under the roadway, the body of an industrial grease trap is concreted around the perimeter, and a cast-iron hatch is installed on the technical well.
How to install a grease trap?
There are two main types of grease trap installation:
- ground installation – in a room near a sink or in the basement of a building;
- underground installation – on a street buried underground, preferably directly at the outlet of the sewer pipe from the building (workshop), where, as a rule, there is a small section of the lawn, where it is easy and simple to carry out earthworks minimally disturbing the roadways and asphalt pavement.
When installing the grease trap indoors, it is necessary to prepare the site on which the grease trap will be installed. It must be level, and if the grease trap is installed above the floor, the stand must be sufficiently strong and stable.
The grease trap must be installed in a place accessible for maintenance.
Do not install the grease trap near frying equipment, electrical distribution boards, etc. The optimal location for the grease trap inside the room is directly under the sink or a group of dish washers; it is also possible to place the grease trap on the side of the sinks, in the basement or in another room along the drain pipe.
Materials from which household grease traps are made
They can be made from a wide variety of materials such as stainless steel, plastic, concrete, and cast iron. Their volume ranges from 35 liters to 45,000 liters and above. They can be located above ground, underground, inside a kitchen, or outside a building.
Household models of grease traps, most often you can find plastic, steel and fiberglass:
- Plastic – the cheapest and most popular grease traps. However, in this case, the low price does not at all indicate the poor quality of the products – modern plastic models boast many serious advantages: durability – the average service life is about 30 years; environmental friendliness – plastic undergoes special processing, so the output turns out to be absolutely safe for humans; ease of use – the models are very compact and lightweight, so their installation and maintenance is not a problem. But the material also has disadvantages: it is quite sensitive to aggressive chemistry and mechanical shock.
- Fiberglass – grease traps of the middle price category. These devices are resistant to direct exposure to aggressive chemicals and are significantly superior to plastic models in terms of strength. Consequently, they have a longer service life – this is confirmed by the fact that fiberglass devices are actively used in industrial enterprises.
- Steel – the most expensive grease traps today. Available in two versions: stainless steel and galvanized steel. The high price is justified by the improved characteristics of the devices: the body material is distinguished by high hygienic properties, maximum strength and durability, as well as inertness to chemical compounds, thanks to which the devices are not afraid of corrosion processes.
How often should the grease trap be cleaned?
The answer to this question depends on a large number of parameters:
- grease trap model;
- the number of connected sinks, sinks, kettles, dishwashers;
- intensity of use;
- parameters of the incoming drain.
In most cases, it is recommended to clean the grease trap under the sink once every 2-4 days. Industrial grease traps are equipped with a fat level indicator, which informs about the accumulation of critical amounts of fat and oil.
Cleaning the grease trap is a mandatory procedure necessary for the high-quality operation of the equipment.
The grease trap is cleaned mechanically. You open the grease trap lid and then manually remove the grease waste. It should be remembered that fatty waste belongs to the 4th class of hazardous, therefore, their disposal should take place at specialized landfills that have a license.
Unfortunately, many owners of cafes and restaurants do not want to waste time and money on the disposal of waste fat, getting rid of it like any other garbage.
